THE RISE OF THE SHORT STORY

In the late 19th and early 20th century, short stories were where the money was. Magazines were full of stories by well-known an obscure writers. There was no shortage of markets to which a short story writer could sell his or her work.

Back then, even authors that preferred long form fiction would write short stories to pay the rent. Authors like Hemingway, Hawthorn, Melville, and Fitzgerald used short story writing as a way to finance their novel writing.

To say things have changed would be an understatement.

However, with the rise of digital publishing, new markets and audiences have been appearing for short fiction. So much so that today a new golden age of short stories seems to be dawning.

This course, written in the first golden age, will be indispensable to writers of short fiction today as they relearn the craft of short story writing.
